.......... from 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud (d. 32 AH) said: "In the past I prayed with the Prophet sallallaahu' alaihi wasallam in Mina 2 raka'at, with Abu Bakr 2 raka'at and with Umar 2 raka'at, then at the beginning of the reign of Caliph Usman, he perfected it into 4 raka'at, then the people disputed, some prayed in qashar and there were those who did not pray. have two rak'ahs received. Someone said to 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud: "You used to denounce Usman, instead you are now praying 4 rak'at!" Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: "disputes are bad." HR Abu Daud (d. 275 H)
Istifadah:
Disputes that arise because of differences of opinion are common cases. Because someone's abilities, understanding, insights and intentions vary. Differences of opinion are common things that have happened since the time of the prophets and friends. But if the difference is not in terms of principles in religion and can cause a split of the people, then we should prioritize unity. This is as applied by Abdullah bin Mas'ud when following ijtihad Usman bin Affan in the matter of qashar in order to safeguard the unity of the people.
In the past, Ibn Mas'ud witnessed the prophet himself and the companions doing qashar while in Mina. At the beginning of the time of Usman caliph, he turned out to have another ijtihad by doing Itmam (perfecting prayer). People are at odds. In order to maintain the unity of the people, Ibn Mas'ud also followed the jihad of the Caliph Usman because he was worried about the emergence of greater danger, namely the slander that he had left the leadership. He took a step back from what he found and believed, so that a greater danger would not occur. Because qashar and Itmam for travelers is a choice. There is no obligation for one of the others.
